Experience

Michael Weiner is a licensed clinical social worker in both Oregon and New York. He is a psychotherapist in private practice in Portland, OR working with children, adolescents, and parents (managing trauma, developmental difficulties, depression and anxiety). He uses the following types of therapy models: psychodynamic, cognitive-behavior, and play therapies. In addition, he provides parent skills training.

He is a consultant in early childhood education at the Riverside Church Weekday School in New York City and the Vivian Olum Child Developmental Center in Eugene, OR and an adjunct professor at the Adelphi University School of Social Work where he teaches practice classes focusing on mental health treatment with children and adolescents and their families, family therapy, and couple therapy.

He has presented his work – related to understanding and managing rough and tumble play in the classroom (preschool-age children), fatherhood and parenting, and medical illness-related parenting – at numerous professional conferences.

Michael Weiner is the co-author of two books: “You and Your Child’s Psychotherapy: The Essential Guide for Parents and Caregivers” published by Oxford University Press and “The Complete Father: Essential Concepts and Archetypes” published by McFarland & Company Inc. He is currently co-authoring a third book written for early childhood educators, tentatively titled “Communication and Classroom Behavior in Early Childhood Education” also to be published by McFarland.

Clinical Experience

 2006-Present         Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist, Private Practice, Portland, OR and New York, NY

Provide psychodynamic psychotherapy and analytically influenced creative play therapy with children, from early childhood to late adolescence, presenting with various types of psychological issues including trauma-related disorders, behavioral disorders, mood disorders and anxiety disorders.   Provide therapeutic and psycho-educational collateral contacts with parents.  Provide treatment coordination for children at risk with CPS, foster care programs, psychiatrists, Family Court and State Supreme Court.  Complete psychiatric evaluations.  Develop, implement and revise treatment plans. 

2004-2010              Staff Psychotherapist, Child & Adolescent Program, Trauma Program, Karen Horney Clinic, New York, NY

Provide psychodynamic psychotherapy and analytically influenced creative play therapy with children, ranging in age from three years old to eighteen years old.  In addition provide therapeutic collateral contacts for their parents and coordination meetings with schools and other involved services. Provide psychodynamic psychotherapy influenced by cognitive behavioral concepts for adults presenting with various types of trauma-related psychiatric disorders and psychosocial issues.  Participate and present in Child and Adolescent Program case conferences with clinic psychiatrist and participate and present in Trauma Program case conferences. Provide treatment coordination for children at risk with CPS, foster care programs, Family Court and State Supreme Court.  Complete intake evaluations and psychiatric evaluations.  Develop, implement, and revise treatment plans.

Teaching Experience

 2010-Present Early Childhood Education Consultant, New York, NY

Provide psychosocial and psycho-educational workshops and consultations to teachers and administrators in early childhood education.  The workshops and consultations provide information and helps teachers develop practical classroom solutions regarding material related to child psychology, working with complex child dynamics in the classroom, understanding difficult family systems, child developmental issues, and working and interacting with parents.  Specific workshops include: understanding the meaning of a children’s play, normalizing and working with aggressive play, recognizing child roles in families of origin by their behavior in the classroom, and identifying atypical child behavior in the classroom. Collaborate with administration and teachers to alter curriculum.  Develop new approach to teacher home visits in order to enhance information gathering techniques for Riverside Church Weekday School.

Teach courses including Social Work with Children and Adolescents, Foundations of Social Work Practice I, Advanced Social Work Practice with Individuals within Family Contexts, Advanced Social Work Practice with Couples.

Developed course material for new Child Welfare course.  Taught courses including Child Welfare, Introduction to interviewing Skills, Human Relations, History of Human Services, Gerontology, Survey of Psychological Approaches Theories, and Introduction to Family Systems, Management Styles, Roles of individuals within Systems, and Internship Seminar.
